No one, outside of the growers who have long resided in the region itself, has deeper roots (as it were) in the village appellations of Cote Chalonnaise than Domaine Faiveley. The family’s holdings in the region go back centuries and are unparalleled in both breadth and quality. Their multitude of single vineyard bottlings of both Mercurey Rouge and Blanc are some of the most coveted, long-lived examples from the appellation you will ever find.  In addition to Mercurey though, they bottle several wines from nearby Montagny, a village very much known for its stellar whites.  Les Cent Pieces is a nearly five-hectare parcel of 30+ year old Chardonnay vines that truly show this village to its best advantage. It’s a wine of considerable power and uncommon grace.  Montagny Blanc tends to be more voluble, rounder and more powerful than Rully further north and the Faiveleys age this, their top Montagny cuvee, in about 10% new oak, a treatment that gives it even more oomph and palate presence.  If you had to compare to the Cotes d’Or, this is more Meursault than Chassagne, more robust and less austere.  Upon uncorking, there’s a lovely floral note to go with its Meyer lemon crème brulee, baking spice and yellow cherry notes.  Full-bodied, with the wood adding a bit of welcome roundness,  it culminates in the kind of stony finish one would expect from this rugged, inhospitable site.  Use big Burgundy stems and watch how this gorgeous Chardonnay develops in the glass as you enjoy it with wild mushrooms, richer poultry and duck dishes, a nice ripe Epoisse or your richest fish and seafood preparations. Still a fine value, you’ll be happy to open this tonight as well as in ten years. Very highly recommended.
