To be honest, we could have chosen any of winemaker Andy Smith’s 2023 vineyard designates to be on the list this year but the good old Chloe Chardonnay, in 2023 a blend of fruit from the warmer Flora Marie Vineyard and DuMOL’s own Bressay Estate Vineyard, sitting in a much cooler situation just a few miles from the Pacific. Chloe has historically been the richest of the DuMOL Chardonnay reserve-style cuvees but in the historic 2023 vintage, one of the most exciting ever here, there’s a lovely linear coastal aspect to it that we found irresistible. This is class in the glass- rich and effusive on the palate but also with a noble sense of restraint and understatement. A truly fine Chloe that reminds one that DuMOL can achieve a level of Burgundian sophistication in their wines while remaining true to their real essence, expressions of Sonoma County’s coolest sites.

By the way, we still have a full stable of all of DuMOL’s 2023 designates, both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Wine Independent, 96 points: The 2023 Chardonnay Chloe prances out with showy scents of spiced pears, juicy peaches and lemon butter, plus suggestions of spice cake and orange blossoms. The medium- to full-bodied palate features electric tension with a satiny texture and lots of stone fruit layers, finishing long with a citrusy lift.
