Brother and sister Sergio and Margherita Molino organically farm an enviable parcel of Bricco Rocca, the undulating, narrow, north-south-running MGA lying low on La Morra’s Pelorosso ridge. Despite being surrounded on three sides by the lovely Giachini, the iconic Brunate and the much-venerated Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyards, it’s a relatively lesser-known site with only four farmers working it. Despite being on a relatively low hill, Rocca has a particularly unique exposure that’s both well-ventilated and avoids the baking heat now prevalent in some of the region’s better-known sites. Rocca is known for producing round, balanced wines with great intensity, big, sensuous La Morra mouthfeels and, often, pleasantly rustic tannins. Sergio, though, seems to manage to coax even more out of his wines, a certain exuberance and energy that serves to frame the aromatics and, particularly, the palates, to a level of rare distinction.

He makes his Langhe Nebbiolo from younger vines and employs a much shorter maceration time to keep the wine fresher and the bouquet more pronounced than his two larger-scale and very ageworthy Barolos. Even though Sergio calls this his ‘white wine,’ (with tongue firmly in cheek) that doesn’t mean this is a lighter style of Langhe Nebb. No. Anything but. Despite the short steeping time and stainless steel aging, this is about as characterful as Langhe Nebb gets! The lifted Morello cherry, black tea, blood orange and fresh and dried herbs just about jump from the glass, leading to a palate that is vibrant, nuanced and plush. The fruit flavors are captivating, the acidity is bright and the tannins crunchy. What more can you ask of a bottle of Langhe Nebbiolo?
