It’s great to get re-acquainted, as it were, with the Ambra Barco Reale because we have enjoyed it numerous times over the years, by the glass at PRIMA Ristorante, on the shelf in PRIMA Vini and, more to the point, in PRIMA’s wine club. Its consistent quality and superb value make it a perfect candidate for our club members to enjoy. Furthermore, the winery has a very compelling story to tell, being one of the smallest and earliest controlled appellations in Italy. The wines from Carmignano, a picturesque hilltop village, located about 20 miles west of Florence, were first regulated by the local aristocracy in the year 1716. These days, the modern town has expanded but the medieval castle still dominates the skyline. Fattoria Ambra also boasts an incredibly long history as a family-owned estate. The Romei Rigoli family has farmed their 24 hectares of vines since the mid-19th century. Their holdings, farmed organically since 2018, are spread out among four very important cru sites within the appellation.

The 2023 Ambra Barco Reale is just one of the winery’s bottlings, produced according to strict regulations using 75% Sangiovese, with the remainder being a blend of Canaiolo, Cabernet and Merlot. The wine is sourced from hillside vineyards composed of limestone, sand and clay, with a portion aged in large oak casks for 6-12 months, depending on the vintage. The resulting wine is full of bright, fresh red fruits, with floral and almond notes, moderate tannins and perfect structure for versatile food pairing. Like so many Italian wines, the Barco Reale is built to complement your dining experience. Be sure to have some on hand for the holiday season and beyond.
