Favia is what happens when an outstanding viticulturist, Annie Favia, meets and marries one of the Napa Valley’s most accomplished winemakers in Andy Erickson. It started when the power couple—both of Colgin, Harlan, Staglin and Screaming Eagle fame—planted their roots into the then up-and-coming Coombsville district, creating over the years a series of absolutely sensational wines that consistently garnered near-perfect scores and a rabid following. The next step in their evolution debuted this past February 1 with the release of their first wine containing not only fruit from the original estate, but also Annie’s newest baby, an 86-acre parcel in Oakville.
The just-released 2023 Favia Napa Valley Cab is meant to be a coming-out wine of sorts for the duo, a chance to experience the quality of Favia’s impossible-to-obtain wines at a price that seems almost downright reasonable. There are plenty of multi-district Napa Valley blends out there, but few that are as vivid and transparent as this. Oakville’s arch native complexity and class matches effortlessly with the Coombsville parcel’s richness and extravagant texture to make a very complete wine that offers up layer upon layer of flavors, even at this early moment in its life. We were very, very impressed!
James Suckling, 98 points: In a new beginning for Favia, an equal blend of Coombsville and Oakville represents the best of both appellations, the fresh, savory, mineral edge of the former intertwining with the deep flavor and floral lift of the latter. Layers of fruit, supported by graphite, dried herbs, flowers and spices, lead to a luscious yet refined palate with finely tuned tannins and a bright line of acidity. A complete, balanced expression of Napa. Excellent.
