Very recently, our good friends at Vintage 59 Imports told us the 2023 Gilbert Picq Vauclaire had just been unpacked. At last! One of our absolute favorite producers and one of their rarest cuvées!

Located in the tiny village of Chichée, where their holdings in the surrounding hills include the two exquisite Premier Cru vineyards, Vosgros and Vaucoupin, brothers Didier and Pascal Picq make superb, mineral-driven wines that are the epitome of classic Chablis. The lovely, textured Vauclaire is sourced from a parcel on the left bank of the Serein River, planted in 1985 and 1986 near both Vosgros and their prized lieu-dit Dessus la Carrière. At only 1 hectare 65, or 4 acres, it's the Picq's largest appellation Chablis parcel and has, like several other villages parcels, always been vinified and aged separately before blending into the straight Chablis cuvée.

Striving for concentration and structure, the fermentation for Vauclaire is longer than is typical but the results are simply stunning. It results in a wine that has tremendous length, lovely body and crisp acidity, exactly what you’d expect in a bottle of well-made Chablis. With a bouquet of fresh fruit underpinned by limestone minerality, it’s a thrilling taste experience and the perfect wine at the perfect time.
