Whatever Giorgio puts his mind to, it’s done, well, Giorgio style! And that means ‘very, very well!’ And the irrepressible Mr. Rivetti been putting his mind to this extraordinary Barbera since 1982! Now produced from 40-year old vines in Castagnole delle Lanze, Costigliole d’Asti and Montegrosso d’Asti, it’s truly a wine that blends the warmer, more rustic personality of the grape when grown in these arid, iron-laden hills with the polish and elan that’s the signature of every wine Giorgio makes. Organically farmed, of course, the malo-lactic and subsequent aging is done in second- and third-passage French oak barriques lending the finished product an incomparable texture and silkiness one just doesn’t see out here in these hills! Good Barbera should be both rich in fruit and high in acidity, and this lovely 2023, while packed with plum, tobacco, blackberry and Morello cherries, finishes with a lip-smack of fresh, crunchy acidity that just makes you want more! It’s really very, very good and will do excellent service with all kinds of richer pasta dishes, veal stew and my favorite combination- Pork Milanese with fried potatoes! Drink all summer long while the grill is hot and be sure to keep a few bottles aside for future reference. Giorgio, you are the best, my friend, and only getting better.
