2023 Graci Etna Rosso
We already know about Alberto Graci’s wonderful Etna Rosato—it was one of PRIMA’s ‘Top Wines of the Year’ in 2025 and an absolute delight. But, let’s face it, Graci is far better-known for his marvelous Etna Rosso grown near Passopisciaro, on the north side of the volcano. Their vineyards are located in the heart of the Alcantara Valley at an altitude of between 600 and 1,000 meters on layers of dried lava.
Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, this was hand-harvested, macerated on its skins for a month (like Barolo!) and vat-aged for 18 months so as not to let any new oak flavor interfere with the gorgeous purity of its fruit. Dry, saline and beautifully aromatic, it weighs in 14.5% ABV but carries it effortlessly. Elegantly, even. We love the notes of black tea, spiced cherry and violet pastilles. Midweight, lithe and ready to go, it’s, perhaps, well-suited to quaffing all on its own but, as it goes wonderfully with a smoky, flavorful pizza, meatballs braised in tomato and spicy pastas, even with a bit of cioppino-like seafood in them.
Easy drinking but sneakily serious, this is a wonderfully multipurpose red you’ll love having around for the next five to seven years. Very highly recommended.
