Rocca di Montegrossi, located in A Monti in Gaiole in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, is very famous for its fabulous organically-farmed reds. One of their top wines is the San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, named after the Romanesque San Marcellino Church that sits on the property. This great vineyard is also the source of the Sangiovese that makes up their Rosato IGT. Together with a touch of Merlot, the Rosato is made with lightly pressed red grapes and a small portion of juice bled off from the vats. It is fermented at low temperatures and aged for a few months in contact with the lees. As a result, the Rosato has great depth of flavor without sacrificing any brightness or delicacy, making it a fantastic Rose to serve with a wide variety of foods- anything from grilled shrimp to roast chicken, or as far as your imagination will take you. Owner, Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi, by the way, is one of the most thoughtful, dedicated and engaging proprietors you’ll ever meet, and he is single-minded in his pursuit of quality in his wines; this lovely Rosato, his dark and savory reds and the estate’s mind-boggling Vin Santo.
