In Piemontese dialect, the term ‘Ronchi’ refers to a hillside plot of land that has been cleared for cultivation, and in the case of the Rocca family, it perfectly describes their 16 hectares of vineyards. Situated in a virtual amphitheater of vines near the town of Neive in the Barbaresco appellation, this fourth-generation vintner crafts a small but impressive portfolio of regional wines, including this remarkable Arneis.

Owner/winemaker Giancarlo Rocca ages this distinctive Arneis in terracotta amphora for eight months before bottling. The grapes are sourced from the sandy/marl soils of the district, fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and then undergo their time in the clay vessels. The porosity of amphora allows for a very slow, controlled micro-oxygenation of the wine, softening the rough edges, while preserving the freshness of the fruit and adding complexity without any oak flavor. Despite the difficult 2023 growing season in Piemonte, a late summer heat spell pushed the grapes to full ripeness and saved the day, especially for white wines that display plenty of lush fruit and are supported by lively acidity.

The Ronchi Arneis ‘in amphoris’ is particularly fine, with an almost Burgundy-like richness and supple texture. The floral nature of the grape variety is evident but there are multiple levels of flavor interest in Ronchi’s unique treatment. I believe this wonderful wine will forever change your impression of Arneis so I encourage you to stock up before word gets out. – Frank Rothstein, PRIMA’s Minister of Value
