5% Semillon. When it comes to American Sauvignon Blanc, really, few do it better than Spottswoode. It truly has been a California benchmark for now 41 vintages! The wine called one of California’s ‘Super Sauvignons’ by wine writer Karen McNeil is now sourced not only from the winery’s Saint Helena Estate, but from top vineyards in both Napa and Sonoma counties- from as far north in Napa as Calistoga and in much cooler appellations like Sonoma Mountain, Bennett Valley and Knights Valley.  Always fresh, lively and packed with energy, the 5% Semillon is an important part of the blend, adding a nice figgy richness and a bit of texture as well as ameliorating the sheer Sauvignon-ness of the Sauvignon. Aged in small steel tanks, French oak barrels, an amphora and vats made from ceramic and concrete, winemaker Arom Weinkauf also employs a judicious amount of Sauvignon Musque, a clone that adds a nice tropical nuance to create what’s really a richly textured, very aristocratic and very complex wine loaded with character, persistence and a sort of stately nobility. And it ages well. Wish we could get more….
