Hands down, Paso Robles is eating the Napa Valley’s lunch these days in terms of sheer bang for buck and it’s wines Denner’s New Colossus Cabernet Sauvignon that prove the point.  Denner has, for the past quarter century, been a premier destination for full-throttle Willow Creek District and Adelaida District reds, focusing on both the Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, over 20 of which are in the ground on the estate. They all love to soak up Paso’s abundant sunshine and become big time, ultra-flavorful wines.  The best of these reds are jam-packed with personality and often represent stunning value compared to their counterparts further north.  The New Colossus Cabernet is just that sort of wine. The 2024 New Colossus is a classic Paso blend of lavishness and polish: ripe cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry liqueur layered with violet, cedar shavings and graphite with undertones of chocolate, espresso, and a whiff of welcome mint. Dark fruited to its very core, it finishes with fine, ripe tannins, a shovelful of loamy earth and a bit of bright acidity that makes you want to go back for another sip. Lovers of Paso Cabs like Austin Hope and Daou will find a lot to love here but so will those who appreciate just a little more restraint in their Cabernets.  The price?  It’s amazing!
