Our biggest selling Italian white of the year and a strong candidate for a Top Five finish in this year’s Wine of the Year list at PRIMA! We know the Scavinos make sensational wines from the Nebbiolo grape- a transcendent Langhe Nebbiolo and a passel of benchmark Barolos, the 2021s of which have just arrived in our warehouse. But did you know the late Enrico Scavino also planted white grapes? And not just the Chardonnay and Sauvignon one sees so often in the Langhe, but Viognier too! Way back in 1997! Chardonnay, he posited, for its structure, Sauvignon for its assertive aromatics and Viognier, the dark horse, for its bit of exoticism and the skin tannins that give life and a bit of texture to a crunchy wine that just seems to get better and better every vintage. Sorriso is comprised of 40% Chardonnay, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Viognier from Castiglione Falletto and La Morra. The 2024 tasted (no, scarfed) last night was the perfect refresher and a grand partner to some roasted red pepper-wrapped tuna and a tangy goat cheese appetizer piped into a celery stick. But, really, who needed the food when the wine itself tasted so good! Very vibrant and aromatic, it was also surprisingly mouth-filling and rich as well. This could so easily be your House White as it checks every single box! The Chardonnay lovers will love it. The Sauvignon Blanc fans will relate too! And those Viognier fans…..well, you just might become one. This is an awesome value!
