While the Scavinos’ terrific 2021 Barolos were some of PRIMA’s best and most popular wines in 2025, the hands-down ‘Value of the Year’ award is another from the same Scavino family, their outstanding Vino Rosso, a ‘freaking delicious’ (to slightly misquote one of our customers) blend of Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Merlot. The Scavinos own some of the best vineyard sites in all of the region, and finding this kind of excellent raw material from which to work is one of their superpowers.
 
Stunningly good, it brings all of the gravitas and character of a Scavino wine to the table at a magnificent price, and it does so with amazing grace and complexity. All grown in the Scavinos’ vineyards around the Langhe, they create the blend and age it in stainless steel tanks for ten months. A lovely purple (that would be the Dolcetto speaking), despite the lack of wood, the wine is sneakily rich and quite savory, packed with bright, juicy flavors and structured like a much more serious and expensive Piemontese red. Dare I say ‘Ba-rolo’?? Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone.
 
This is a great example of the precise Scavino style and a wine to enjoy on a daily basis while you wait for those magnificent Barolos in your cellar to mature. Want to drink of bottle of Nebbiolo with your pasta tonight but don’t want to pay the freight? Sure! But for burgers off the grill, this would be downright sublime.
