The Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay has become, for us, one of the real important achievements in the category and developed one of the strongest followings of any Chard we sell. It’s rich with full-on, lees-stirred texture and lots of luxurious new French oak, but with an important twist: longtime Shafer winemaker Elias Fernandez prevents the wine from going through malolactic fermentation in the cellar thus keeping it crisp, structured and aromatically focused, making it one of the liveliest and freshest full-throttle Chardonnays we know. Despite its relative weight and richness, it’s not at all ponderous or heavy.

The picture-perfect 2024 vintage has produced a Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay with elegant, nicely defined aromatics with rich flavors of melon, honeysuckle, apricot, pineapple, citrus zest and flint. This abundance of exotic fruit is completed with bright acidity, seamless balance and a long, mouth-coating mineral finish. Lots of zingy pop here! Even though it would even be a match for oysters or fresh seafood, it’s a fabulous treat when you wheel out your richest fish and seafood dishes, game birds like quail or just about anything else you like with pedal-to-the-metal Chards.
