Our search for great white Burgundy for everyday drinking has taken us deep in the Mâconnais, Burgundy’s southernmost outpost. These rolling granitic hills west of the city of Mâcon hold the last vestiges of true value in the region, an area that we parsimonious wine merchants often mine for our own pleasure.

The grapes for this cuvée come from 50-plus-year-old vines and are sourced from four parcels within the Mâcon’s famed Pierreclos sub-appellation: Margots, Le Chateau, Les Grands Buys and La Bucherate. (All would be considered among Mâcon’s Grand or Premier Crus if such designations existed.)

This is a white of authenticity, purity and character! No wood—just wonderfully vivid fruit, taut acidity and a mineral-tinged, citrusy finish that makes it a great pairing with oysters, mussels and clams and the like. It’s sneakily rich, so it will also find a happy home with roasted poultry and all sort of fish dishes. As proven at Chez Rittmaster over many vintages of this wine, it’s thoroughly delicious on its own, too!
