Blue Run Kentucky Straight Emerald Rye
116.7 proof (58.35% ABV)
Batch: Winter, 10/25/2022
Blue Run has built a reputation among whiskey collectors for releases that combine serious distilling talent with small-batch blending, and Emerald Rye is one of the clearest examples of why the brand gets so much attention. The whiskey was distilled at Castle & Key Distillery under the guidance of legendary master distiller Jim Rutledge, then blended by whiskey director Shaylyn Gammon from just 189 carefully selected barrels—a tiny batch by Kentucky standards.
It’s also bottled at full barrel proof, so the whiskey hasn’t been diluted down before bottling. That higher proof preserves the texture and intensity the spirit developed in barrel, giving it the layered spice and depth rye lovers (like us) chase.
In the glass, Emerald Rye delivers exactly what serious rye drinkers hope for: vibrant rye spice, fresh herbs, citrus peel, caramel, and toasted oak with a long, warming finish. The blend was designed specifically to highlight the spice, pepper, and herbal notes that define great rye whiskey while keeping the overall profile balanced and approachable.
Yes, it sits at a higher price point than everyday rye, but the combination of limited-barrel blending, barrel-proof intensity, and the pedigree behind the distillation makes it far more than a shelf whiskey. This is the kind of bottle whiskey enthusiasts reach for when they want something with real character.
Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open up the aromatics—though if you’re feeling bold, it makes an unforgettable first-class Manhattan or Sazerac where the rye’s spice is really on display.
