The Durand™ Wine Opener: The Ultimate Tool for Opening Older Wines
Discover The Durand™, the wine opener specifically designed to safely remove fragile, aged corks from older bottles. Whether you're a collector, sommelier, or simply a wine enthusiast, The Durand is the essential tool for preserving the integrity of rare and vintage wines when opening.
Background and Purpose
Developed by wine collector Mark Taylor and named after his favorite vineyard, The Durand has become a go-to tool for anyone who regularly opens older bottles. Aged corks often become brittle, crumbly, or stuck over time, making traditional corkscrews unreliable and risky for opening these special wines. The Durand was created to address this challenge, combining the best features of a corkscrew and an ah-so (two-prong) opener into a single, innovative design.
How The Durand Works
The Durand is a two-part wine opener designed to safely extract even the most delicate corks:
-
Corkscrew Spiral: First, insert the corkscrew spiral into the center of the cork, turning it gently to penetrate deeply without damaging the cork’s structure.
-
Ah-So Prongs: Then, slide the specially designed ah-so prongs down between the cork and the bottle neck. These prongs grip the sides of the cork, providing extra stability and preventing crumbling as the cork is removed.
-
Extraction: Gently twist and pull the cork out, using both the spiral and prongs to extract it intact. The Durand’s unique dual-action method provides the control and support needed to safely open older bottles without breaking the cork.

How to Use The Durand Effectively
-
Prepare the Bottle: Ensure the bottle is upright and stable. Use a foil cutter or knife to carefully remove the foil cap.
-
Insert the Corkscrew: Position the corkscrew spiral in the center of the cork and gently twist until the spiral is fully inserted.
-
Insert the Ah-So Prongs: Slide the prongs carefully between the cork and the bottle neck, using a back-and-forth motion to get the prongs fully in place.
-
Extract the Cork: With a gentle twist and pull motion, slowly extract the cork from the bottle. The dual-action of the corkscrew and prongs ensures the cork remains intact.
