Fontbonne comes from the same alpine herbal tradition that produced Chartreuse, and for many drinkers it offers a fascinating point of comparison. The recipe dates to the early 20th century and was developed by monks in the Chartreuse order before the liqueur eventually moved into commercial production. Today it’s made in southeastern France using a blend of mountain herbs and botanicals macerated and distilled in the classic alpine style.

If you know Green Chartreuse, you’ll immediately recognize the lineage—but Fontbonne leans a bit gentler and more honeyed, with a distinctive overtone of wild fennel. Expect layered herbal notes, citrus peel, warm spice, and a touch of alpine freshness, with slightly less intensity than Chartreuse’s famously powerful profile.

In cocktails, it behaves much the same way: try it in a Last Word, Bijou, or Chartreuse Swizzle for a slightly softer, rounder take on the classic formulas. It’s also lovely simply over ice or with a splash of soda, where the herbal complexity can really open up.
