The Darroze family has long been one of Armagnac’s great champions, bottling single-estate, vintage Armagnacs that capture the personality of individual domaines rather than blending across producers. It’s a Burgundy-like philosophy applied to brandy—each bottling reflecting a specific grower, vineyard area, and harvest year rather than a house style.

This 1984 release comes from Domaine de Cantau Mauleon in Bas-Armagnac, widely considered the region’s most elegant subzone thanks to its sandy soils and aromatic eaux-de-vie. Unlike Cognac—which is typically distilled twice in pot stills and blended across vintages—traditional Armagnac is usually distilled once in a continuous Armagnac still, producing a spirit with more texture and rustic character. It’s also far more likely to be bottled as a single vintage from a single estate, which is exactly what Darroze specializes in.

After nearly four decades in Gascon oak, the wine-like depth is striking: dried fig, prune, candied orange peel, toasted walnut, cocoa, and warm baking spice unfold gradually in the glass. The texture is silky and layered, with that unmistakable Armagnac signature—rich, soulful, and just a little bolder than its sleek cousin Cognac.

A contemplative after-dinner spirit. Pour it neat in a small glass and give it a few minutes; like a mature Barolo or old Madeira, it rewards patience as the aromas continue to evolve.
